The Logistics Dictionary: What All Those Acronyms and Buzzwords Mean
In this episode of Rozmowy Logistyków, Piotr Skobało and Adam Sobolewski, answering listener questions, explain the most important abbreviations and industry terms used in logistics. They demystify jargon that can be baffling for people outside the field.
UNITS AND GOODS FLOW
An SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is the lowest unit at which goods are tracked — e.g. a specific lipstick in a given color and size, not the whole product line. Lead time is transit time — how long a shipment (or production run) needs from point A to B; in customer-facing conversations, "delivery time" is more common. Just-in-time, a term from the Japanese automotive industry, means delivery timed exactly to the moment of need — a concept heavily tested by the supply chain disruptions of recent years.
FLOW AND FULFILLMENT MODELS
Cross-docking is "in and out" — goods unloaded from one truck go straight onto another, without ever going into storage. Dropshipping skips the intermediate point entirely — the shipment goes straight from the manufacturer/supplier to the end customer, bypassing your own warehouse. Make-to-order (MTO) and build-to-order (BTO) mean production only starts once an order is placed (the classic example: configuring a car at a dealership) — this optimizes inventory levels, because you hold stock at the component level (described in a BOM, Bill of Materials), not as finished products.
SYSTEMS AND COMMUNICATION
A TMS (Transport Management System) manages transport only, as distinct from a WMS (warehouse) and the broader ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) — an overarching system covering finance, invoicing, and production planning, where the warehouse module rarely matches a specialized WMS. EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is a set of standards for electronic data exchange between different companies' systems across the supply chain. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) reads tags via radio waves — the technology behind unattended self-checkout, getting cheaper and more widely used.
THE ROLE OF EXTERNAL PARTNERS
3PL (Third Party Logistics) and 4PL (Fourth Party Logistics) describe how deeply involved an external company is in handling logistics — from an operational contractor to a partner managing the entire strategy. Reverse logistics (returns logistics) is flow in the opposite direction from distribution — at larger scale it often needs entirely separate, specialized infrastructure.
METRICS AND PLANNING
KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are the indicators you're held accountable for — different from metrics you merely track to monitor whether the KPIs will be met (e.g. delivery time is a KPI, while parcel-preparation time or transit time to the courier hub are metrics that feed into that result). S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning) is an integrated process linking demand, supply, and distribution planning with the financial outcome — in short: logistics, sales, and marketing people sit down together and agree on what will happen over the coming months.
INCOTERMS: WHO PAYS, AND WHEN
Incoterms define the moment responsibility for goods passes between sender and recipient in international trade — e.g. EXW (ex works) means the goods become yours right at the supplier's factory door, and you organize transport and insurance from that point on. The distinction has a direct financial impact — getting the wrong Incoterm can generate unexpected costs.
TRANSPORT AND SALES CHANNELS
LTL (Less Than Truckload) is a partial shipment, FTL (Full Truckload) is a full truck for a single recipient. D0, D+1, D+2 describe the fulfillment horizon counted from the day of order (D0 is same-day delivery, D+1 is next day). Omnichannel differs from multichannel in that a customer can discover a product in one channel, order it in another, and pick it up in a third — it's a consistent experience across channels, not just their parallel existence side by side.
